Well Testing
The purpose of a
well test is to determine what a well is capable of producing on a
continuous basis.
The length of a test will depend on the
depth of the well, how much water the well produces and the time the
well was last pumped.
A well can only be tested up to the
capacity of what the pump is capable of pumping.
Pumps are designed to produce a
specific quantity of water i.e., 5, 7, 10, ect. gallons per minute.
Although a 5 gallon per minute pump is
designed to pump 5 gallons per minute it can actually produce between
about 1 1/2 to 7 gallons per minute depending on how high the water
has to be lifted in order to be pumped out of the well.
Regardless of how deep a pump is
setting in a well it only has to lift the water from where the water
is standing. Therefore with a higher water level the pump will produce
more water and with a lower water level the pump will produce less.
When a test is started the water level
in the well will probably drop. As the
water level drops
the pump will produce less water.
Eventually this decreasing pump
production will match the production of the well and the water will
maintain its level. This is the amount the well should be certi fied
for.
